Ruth De Silva

Ruth carves mainly in alabaster and sometimes soapstone. Her love of carving began as a child when she would chip away at pieces of wood with her father’s chisels.

'I suppose I was always destined to carve but it wasn’t until teacher training when my Art tutor presented me with my first piece of Welsh alabaster that I began to discover I could surprisingly produce something aesthetically pleasing. I ended up with a degree but have always regarded myself just a hobbyist.'

Ruth says 'I don’t follow the usual rules of sketching and making clay prototypes but simply let the rock dictate. Form always exists in rock, I just Chip away at all the un- necessary bits until I find it.'
