Gill Drew

I am loving to paint again after teaching art at secondary school for many years and I now spend most days in the studio.

My enjoyment of encouraging others to explore their creativity now happens in workshops and art classes. My subject matter includes figurative and landscape pieces. There is often a narrative in the piece, a connection on a spiritual level, to a memory, or a feeling of nostalgia that resonates emotionally through the shapes, imagery and colours. I seek to capture, engage, inspire and raise questions and intrigue in the viewer.

There are glimpses of places - a sweep of a hill in the sun - the light through the trees - the light in a room - richness of colours, layering, textures and a feeling of movement lead you in. I love to pay attention to the sounds, the details and shapes, the surprises and discoveries found in the countryside or other subject matter. This could be standing on the cliffs by the sea or on a regular walk with the dog on the edge of the city where I live, finding glimpses of wildness where nature isn’t tamed.

I initially trained in textiles/embroidery BA(hons) in Loughborough and now work in acrylics, exploring details and surfaces. My process begins playfully, laying down colours and textures on to which the composition develops. Each piece evolves as I explore the subject matter and enjoy the discoveries. Paint is layered, sanded, scratched into and finally glazed and surfaced with a wax finish.
