You say you use your non-dominant hand to create these drawings, is this because of your disability rendering your dominant hand useless?
I use my non-dominant hand on account of a brain injury aged 12 years old which left my with temporary paralysis from the neck down after being hit by two cars as a pedestrian. My left exhibits heightened tension and flexion primarily in the wrist and fingers as a result so there only gross motor control, no fine motor control or dexterity. I struggle with lines, control with a fatigueing right hand so I mark and scribble loosely and thankfully that effects a stylised drawing.
I really like your piece 'not everything was better in the past', it certainly rings different now with a pandemic. What was your original intention with this work?
When I create I love to try and capture a moment or feelings and thoughts of persons. Titles often come to me later in the process and 'Not everything was better in the past' is a piece depicting a tender intimacy in which I believe glimpses into, and allows for the existence of separate journeys and up to that single point. Experiences and perspectives which might not marry up. Imperfect parts that are whole and a moment of recognition maybe.
What was the motivator to use recycled materials as a canvas?
I started using reclaimed/recycled products primarily to reduce the cost and impact of the art. I soon found that when confronted with a canvas of recycled materials I became less precious about my art and much more free to mark. I had always been intimidated by the finite resource of spartan, white artistic paper or canvas. scared of mistakes
